Liner notes:
With the "Mythology" series finally in collector's hands, it arrived as a bit of a disappointment (see ICE April, 2000). The sets don't live up to expectations, or Strawberry's reputation. Most of the John Barrett material is of inferior quality. With a total of 11 discs for the 3 volumes, it seems like they were trying to stretch the material as far as possible, with live performances that are available elsewhere (or unlistenable), and interviews (though interesting) that don't justify the size of the project.
Having said this, there is afair amount of material that is worthwile in the collections, being either previously unreleased or significantly upgraded. This collection delivers the choice material readily (and affordably) into the ever eager lister's ears. We have added a few goodies to top it off.
Disc one contains broadcast material. All material is previously unreleased or in upgraded quality. Of particular note are the newly discovered BBC broadcast tape from 7/30/63 and the 1967 "Where It's At" broadcast of the "Sgt. Pepper" album. "Sunday Night at the Palladium" and "Royal Command Performance" are the true launch of Beatlemania, presented here in their entireties.
Disc two contains studio material. The edit takes of "I Saw Her Standing There" are previously unreleased. The sessions for "One After 909", "Hold Me Tight" and "Don't Bother Me" are from a newly discovered tape source in best-to-date quality. The "White Album" tracks have been previously available from acetate, but these are from a tape source. "Octopus's Garden" is an unusual version containing only Ringo's vocals.
The "Mythology" bubble may be broken but still "a splendid time is guaranteed for all".
My comments:
"I've got nothing to say but it's OK..."
